Apart from the whole carbon footprint thing being little more than a moral panic* the use of electricity in this instance** could come from entirely non carbon releasing sources. The percentage of electricity produced using nuclear power in france and germany is higher than britain (for example) so 'carbon footprint' arguments across nations in terms of whitegoods usage is pretty meaningless

*cows contribute fairly substantially to methane emmisions, kill all cows!
