Sometimes the effect someone can have on a team isn't measured by their performance alone: look at the return of Rio Ferdinand to the Manchester United side; a defense that was leaking goals became one that has the 2nd best defensive record in the league, and, in any other season, would have the best. It's not that Rio plays especially well, it's that his mere presence gives the other defenders more confidence, and they all play better as a result.
