This international storm appears to be the equvilient of criticising someone for saying that all the jews should be killed after making a speech about the historical impact of National Socialism in which he quoted Hitler's remarks on the "jewish problem".

It's just the same as the "controversy" over the extremely dull cartoons; it only happened because people wanted to cause controversy, or wanted to use it as propaganda against the people who came out with the things in the first place.
