Yes, but most netsplits last less than five minutes (the time it takes before a server automatically tries to reconnect). And even if a server went down for a longer period of time, the rest of the network would still function. If your private server goes down, you're screwed.
I'm sure some of the old-timers can remember having emergency 'backup' channels on NG for the inevitable occasions when the private server simply stopped working.
