I'm sure I saw an interview with tarantino once and he said the reason there were two films was that it was all filmed at once for one film. But even after editing it was still over 4 hours long so they made it into two.
Putting the two of them together back-to-back makes it 247 minutes long (which is just over 4 hours).

That's with all the credits from both, and without any editting whatsoever.
