I think it's something you should seriously consider.
Most of the people are mature enough to know what putting idiotic pictures in means.
Also if you use Firefox (and Opera has this option, I'd imagine) you can block pictures if you don't want them. It's just when I'm at work (whenever I get back to work...) I often blocked images on GD (which stopped avatars) so it looked less like I was dossing around on the net when I was in the staffroom.
