I'd also say that your hypothesis that "big clubs always get big again" lacks sufficient evidence; indeed, it's pretty much impossible to test as any counterexample could simply be that club's lean patch. In any case, Everton were a club of similar stature to the above for much of their history, and they're not exactly setting the world alight at the moment, are they?

Football results are based very much on small details and vagaries in any case. You do get trends coming out, but especially in recent times, the title and relegation races have both turned on freak injuries, and prediction is a fairly inexact non-science at best.
