While this is definitely true in Ireland, for example, and I imagine elsewhere, the dominant party (normally Fianna Fail) has found itself moderated by the requirements of the parties it has gone into power with. Realistically there are probably zero changes that could feasibly be brought in in the next twenty years which would substantially change the social fabric of the UK or any other western democracy. However something like PR at least sets us up better for when the attempt is made to actually bring those changes about. That said we all do seem to be arguing rather different points in this thread.
