You are right. I have some different beliefs on tithing. The church thinks you should tithe 10% of your income before taxes. I think that is wrong. You are supposed to tithe 10% of your gain. If you still owe for rent/mortgage, utilities, food, parking, insurance, and all your actual needs then you how can you afford to tithe when you are in debt? I think you should tithe 10% of your gain after taxes and after you have paid the bills. This of course leaves little for the church but it's much closer to what the Bible states about tithing and being in debt.
