For the game, I do not see any major difference between Ascendancy dominating the game or The Legion/Fury train steam rollering the universe.

I ve been in alliances where I could be just as active as I wanted to, before the alliance limidt was put into the game. I escorted when I was on, deffed when I got on, got def if I was active enough to get it. Pretty much like what asc is like now. The rules are the sae now as it has been in other alliances in the past. All alliances had peons who just sent def every now and then, and who played more like a mascot who just helped out when he bothered. There is no real difference
