Personally, I find it much better now than it was back then.
I enjoy being able to plod along without having HC screaming at me to be more active, defend more, attack more etc.
And turning active, when it fits into my real life, not because some pimply faced teenager decides the "alliance needs it".
For the game, I do not see any major difference between Ascendancy dominating the game or The Legion/Fury train steam rollering the universe.
