Your sample is biased because you presumably only talk to indierock bands who make most of their money from touring. The 'tour' model isnt really representative of music in general though.

Also most indie bands are mainly amateurs who are in it for fun rather than people who have been devoting themselves to music for decades rather than just playing in a band with friends while working a full-time job, so again its not really comparable to professional musicians.
