There's no difference between any of these terms in an inherent fashion. However, from experience people who are "half-cast" prefer to be called "mixed race". So why not oblige?
Personally I find "mixed race" to be fairly offensive anyway - it implies that "whites" or "blacks" are somehow "pure". But hey, people can choose whatever term they want.
