Transport is going to be a massive factor in this - most of your travel will probably be by tube so you want a decent line.

If I were restricting myself to Zones 3&4, I'd want to be North of the river. If you have no preference either way, I'd go for one of the following:

Richmond
Balham
Highgate

Zones 3&4 are quite far out though dude - why are you ignoring Zones 1&2?
