They've only existed for about 20 years. However one of the two parties which merged to form the Liberal Democrats, the Liberal party, was in power for extended periods of time during the 19th and early 20th centuries.


PS I find it rather bizzare how the UK doesn't use PR. Christ knows if Ireland used FPP we'd have some sort of fascist Fianna Fail tyranny in place by now.
