You should read the first 4-5 chapters of this, its probably the best introduction to deeper mathematical concepts Ive encountered (ignore the reviews, theyre largely written by cogsci idiots who missed the point and are judging it based on how well it directly contributes to theories of consciousness rather than on its exposition of mathematics).
