We notice the defence, we just aren't so bothered about bringing every single ship home as others are. If the gains outweigh the losses and it won't have too much of a negative impact on future attacks then why not land.
Also we play a game where there is an element of deception to it. As an attacker you can bluff your attack and as a defender you are in an even more powerful position to bluff your defence. As such you have to try and read what the other fleets are doing and we encourage our members not to pull on the first sign of defence but to run a few calcs based on what the scans (AU's for the planet and the defenders and newsscans on all to help guesstimate what they are doing) and sandmans are telling you and then a calc based on the worst case and then listening to your gut instinct if its worth taking a calculated risk. Most of the time it pays off, occasionally it results in a crash but either way its rarely a blind crash (obviously every alliance has the odd person who forgets to recalls for some reason)
Too many people in this game pull at the first sign of defence when 10mins of investifation would show they would get through with a profit being made. And too many defenders ignore the gains being made by an attacker and leave their ships defending something that they assme will make a recall and leave themselves with large losses as they havent calced the full gains correctly
