Immobilisers and insurance

A little plea for help.
I've just signed up for car insurance for the coming year, but the insurance people want proof that I have a Thatcham approved immobiliser. I've contacted Thatcham, and they've confirmed that my car has a Cat2 immobiliser as standard, but I don't seem to have anything prooving this- the insurers seem to think that I should have a certificate. Any ideas about what/where I should be looking for?

Ask Thatcham for a written confirmation of your immobiliser in your car, copy it, keep the original and send your insurance company the duplicate.

Re: Immobilisers and insurance

I sent Thatcham another email and they say that my insurer shouldn't be asking for proof, and that they don't issue certificates themselves. The guy at the garage I rang said the same thing, that the insurer should be able to check. M&S insurance may be cheap, but it's not prooving to be any good so far... :(

phone you insurers back and ask if they have an e-mail address that you can forward the mail from thatcham to

Just send the insurance company a letter stating that you have whatever vehicle (I presume you prove this elsewhere in your documents) and that you've confirmed with Thatcham that this vehicle has it.

Alternatively, these "research" papers may have your car in them :

one of the methods of sending in proof is via email, so I tried emailing them copies of the emails from Thatcham, the mail has been retrying for the past few days but finally gave up today, as there's no mail-server at msinsure.co.uk (the address in the policy documents...), and a whois reveails it was registered this July by "Pradeep Dhanda", a "non-trading individual who has opted to have their address omitted from the WHOIS service". Well done M&S.

You should be glad that theres no mail server listed there - if there was then you could have given out your insurance details to a cybersquatter. presumably all the revelent details would have been buried within the nested replies
