#forums

What's the reasoning behind some of the ops in #forums, when they don't really have any association with these forums?

Surely it'd be a better idea for the "regulars" to all have ops, rather than mods/admins on the forums getting them?

It's been discussed a few times on irc, but JJ never goes there anymore :(

It's a petty question I know, but JBG just banned me for making fun of him (for making a shitty "your mother" joke OH MAN THATS SO FUNNY FOR THE TWENTY-SEVENTH TIME) and it pissed me off a bit.

Well it doesn't.

People like vampy or nodrog don't post that often in here, but chat regularly in #forums.

My point is that the forums are separate from #forums, yet linked by mods->ops for some inexplicable reason.

It's not "important to me".

I just don't see why there is a hierarchy there at all. And if there does need to be one, why are mods/admins the ones with ops?

For the sole reason of annoying you as much as possible.

Re: #forums

TK is right, pretty much all worthwhile channels have their regulars as ops. Creating an artificial hierarchy and giving ops to people who are rarely active in the channel like furball is silly.

it's a point of reference to not just the GD community but also regulars from other areas of the forum, looking for a mod.

By "a vote" he means 2 people voted for koen when they didn't know it counted, wanted to change their votes and even then it was a tie anyway so Jonny decided on Koen!

If we can't get proper democracy working for a situation as important as this, how can it be run well for such trivial things as general elections?

If it was the official forums channel then all the mods would be there actively, no doubt opped or at least voiced (to make them visible) giving assistance anyone that walks in with a question or problem regarding the forums.

Since #forums is flagged as an unofficial home for users of the forums it would seem more logical to put the "regulars" in charge of it's opping.

It was always a place where people could go and find a forum mod/admin if they wanted to have a quick chat over IRC rather than sending a PM on the forums. This is especially useful for things that you want answering immediately and aren't bothered which mod helps you out. It's an unofficial channel so that the mods can avoid the stupid shit you have to adopt when you become an official PA channel.

My god, why the hell have you forsaken me? Please try to spot the inconsistencies in your post Marv :(

#forums is the unofficial home of the forums' users, and is 'run' by the moderators of the forums. Not just GD, but the entire forums. As such, the mods tend to hang around there. However, it's not an official PA channel, so there's none of this stupid malarkey that Marv refers to with mods having permanent ops/voice to distinguish them. Anyone that comes in asking for help generally receives that help, although they're often just directed to PM JJ/JBG over the forums.

#forums became the main hang-out for the GD regulars some time ago, but this doesn't equate to it being GD's channel. If GD wants its own channel with its regulars as ops, then go and register #gd. No-one already has, so it's free for nod to turn it into phimosis central. But seriously, #gd would be crap. All you'd get is banwars and mass abuse by whoever owns the channel. GD is seriously that petty. The reason #forums runs so well is because there's no opportunity for this kind of power abuse, even if I've pulled the mini-Hitler act once in a while because nod feels like posting pictures of a beheading.

Not voting because you think the entire thing is stupid and badly conceived is hardly something that disqualifies one from thinking the entire thing is stupid and badly conceived.

This is fairly disingenious. It always has been the "main hang-out for the GD regulars". There's never been a period when it wasn't.

That's just not true, no one like banwars any more it's just stupid. We've moved beyond such petty behaviour :)

Well, most of us, but as the general consensus will still be reasonable we could ban people who banned too much. Honestly, this whole idea of "we're not responsible enough to have power" that you seem to be suggesting is mind bogglingly stupid.

It doesn't mean that much.

In the chatroom, you get a list of all the people in there. This could be 2 people or it could be 200. All these people can pretty much talk at the same time (but that doesn't happen - usually at the most only 5 or so do ).

People with ops are hierarchically higher in the chatroom. The only real perks are:
-They can set the "topic" of the channel (another word for a chatroom). This is the message that people are greeted with on joining the chatroom. In #forums, it's normally just a quote from the channel or an amusing website someone has found.
-They can mute the channel, so only themselves and other people with ops can talk.
-They appear at the top of the list of users in the chatroom.
-They can kick people out of the channel.
-They can ban people from the channel, so they can't come in.
-They can invite people into the channel from elsewhere (you can be in many channels at once).

That's about it really. Which is why it isn't a big deal, but it'd still be nice for all the "regulars" to have ops.

There is another step here, which is called "voice" - voiced people can also talk in a muted channel.

I think the current op system is fine. I don't get banned that often and so it's working for me. I think let's give tk and nodrog voice, so they can feel important and move along.

There's a surprisingly high amount of lurkers actually.

At a guess (sorry if I miss anyone out) I'd propose:

nodrog
vampy
Jakiri
Deepflow
TomKat (!!)
jer
phang
KaneED
Dirte
KoeN
idimmu
Alessio
Game
Achi
Lambie
Phil^

Which still leaves about 75% of the channel's users non-opped.
