The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

So, what with the plot thread RPing contest going along quite well and looking very interesting, I had an interesting idea today.

Basically, we take myself, PK and Inspectre. The archives of this forum are littered with dead threads made by one of us three. Each of us then selects a dead thread of one of the others, and re-makes it. So I might do TSW or Colonies, for example, while PK might do Marines or Crossroads and Inspectre might do ICE9 or Tellianror. We then see if we can make a thread, the setting written by another person, work out to its conclusion.

The rules governing our conduct would be simple. Firstly, we would not be able to majorly change the setting of the thread we took up (for example, if I took Colonies, I could not replace the Terrans with giant fire breathing dragons and the Antless with talking vending machine cups). Secondly, the DM that originally created one thread picked up by another DM would not be able to correct that DM at any point or attempt to intervene in the thread (except through RPing, so while I could RP in Inspectre's version of Tellianror I would not be allowed to correct diversions from my vision of the world, etc).

Even if we get a good response, we will not be executing this idea for quite some time. That's a pre-emptive strike against people like KoL or Rich of FJ who would otherwise leap at my throat and rend my jugular with cries of 'WHY WON'T YOU DM THE THREADS YOU'VE ALREADY GOT?!' etc etc.

So, who here would be interested in seeing us try to run eachother's threads?

Would be intresting though.

The first one to let his thread die has to live with the shame of being the 'loser'. I assure you on PK and Inspectre's behalf that this will motivate them to continue the threads on to the end. To be more like me.

you can't excommuicate a branded heretic! we're a minority! you have to allow branded heretics the same opportunity to flourish in the church as those who believe in the right religion! That's what positive discrimination is all about!

By the power invested in my by the Universal Life Church, I hereby excommunicate you permanently.

Or something.

Inspectre: Why don't we try counting the number of successfully completed threads we've each got? I'll go first. Seven. You?

Inspectre 26 Feb 2004 21:01

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

What makes you think I was part of your Church to being with? :p

As for successfully completed threads, why don't we compare percentages as well? I probably have somewhere between 5-10%. I doubt you can match that, considering how many "failed threads of the week" you have made. :p

No Dachi 26 Feb 2004 21:03

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

For five to ten percent you'd need to have made either 20 or 10 threads, and you've made more than that.

In contrast I can have 10% finished properly even by having made seventy threads, which I don't think I have done

EDIT: I sense we're wondering off tangent here. I'll allow Inspectre to fire off a parting shot, then we get back on topic.

Crazyboy 26 Feb 2004 21:04

who said i'd bitch anybody about finishing the threads they're already running?

I know they won't so i've decided to stop bothering for a while.

expect to see posts in every dead thread i was in in about a month or so, ok?

on the other hand, this in fact looks like a good idea, i might actaully get to finish the first mission i start in marines with my uber-l33t ex-black ops stealth group which is kinda sneaky and super trained

Richpur 26 Feb 2004 23:39

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

The problem with most of these threads is that the DM makes them and by the time all the players have signed up and worked out what they're doing the DM has got bored; if you're remaking a thread you like that has already been done to some extent the players shouldn't take so long and as you're doing it from a fresh viewpoint you haven't spent ages workign on it before starting the thread.... It might even work.

Because that is what the RP competetion thingy is for. Also I doubt many people would be able to remember their characters from that long ago. Naturally if they can and they feel the need to swap with somebody then so be it...

I won't jump at his throat and rend his jugular, because i know yelling at him about the thread he's already got won't help in any way and it looks like KoL and Rich both like the idea as well.

So that just leaves everyone in 1 of their threads, which reminds me to get back to work on a thread of my own, which will not be coming for a long while because i'll be busy enough with the threads i'm currently in and the few that i'll be joining once they get started

Different threads for different people, KoL.

AK: It's an idea, but we figured it would be more interesting if we three recreated eachothers' threads. That way I'll be recrating one whilst having one of my own recreated.

FJ: As DJ correctly pointed out, I have already stated that we won't do this for some time, so as you correctly pointed out there is no point in you complaining yourself about how I haven't started the Crusade yet, as if I'd had the time I'd have already done so...

Actually it's been more active than usual lately. I checked this morning and found eight threads with replies. Eight! It's nowhere near as much as we used to get, but it is a lot more than we've been getting recently...

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

ND: weeelll... if you gave me a thread idea to maccomodate I could do that :D

KoL: You never were a part of Shraan were you? It's a war thread, not a psychic-vs-psychic battleout (only one of the threads falled into that catagory). Shraan is, or was when it was running, simply people taking roles in opposing factions and battling it out between each other. Now it's turned into a space-survival thread against creatures that are anti-psychic (which stops the annoyance of what you call 'overpowered' characters popping up and taking the RPG over). I was hoping ND might be able to do this better than me because I have the habit of forgetting to actually post opening threads of Shraan, now not even bothering.

No Dachi 3 Mar 2004 18:45

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

You couldn't. The original Colonies thread was the most active thread I have ever seen, and even Alsar Prime never got over eight pages in a night.

a page in a night, yes, i've seen the shifter hotel gain 2 pages in a night once, but 8 pages? no, that's impossible

Enough said.

And I'm not saying an exact number, but there was a couple nights where there was definitely 5-6-7-8 pages created. So why don't you shut the **** up and get back to your utterly crappy roleplaying, flapjack.

He's going to rip you to pieces. You've just challenged Firemaster MacCheese. You're going down...

Inspectre 3 Mar 2004 21:15

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

Pffft . . . "Firemaster MacCheese" is a has-been. No doubt he's keep his flamethrower sharp over in GD-land, but he's lost all respectability to me. That's what happens when you leave the RP forums, and then decide to come back several months later to bash them. If you want to mouth off about how "utterly crap" we all are Cheese, then either you shut the **** up, or you prove your point by actually coming back to the RP boards, and making a successful thread that proves how degenerate we are. Don't even try using your old threads that were around years ago. Those are gone, they aren't coming back, and they most certainly aren't going to help you prove your points.

Richpur 3 Mar 2004 21:41

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

The point Cheese was making seems to be that the roleplaying here isn't up to the old standards, and he's quite right. You can't tell him to make a thread to prove this since by definition you can not make a thread now to prove that people who no longer come here knew how to RP better than the people around now. Even those who are still around from that time don't really put the same sort of effort into it since they've got 'lives'.

The difference is mostly in those " / "s, at one point people wrote posts with the intention that they would be fun for other people to read and reply to, now there are more people who only try and make it fun for themselves by outdoing everyone else and winning rather than by the playing. This even gets to the point that the spelling and grammer reaches the "hard to read" stage, making reading a thread an effort rather than a pleasure.

AcidK 4 Mar 2004 02:23

Re: The Great RP Forum Thread Exchange

standards are for those that think to highly.

Yeesh, for gods sake, everyone stop nagging and pull yurselves together. Rolplaying is about taking the role of a character and fitting that character to said roleplays, not about 'standards' and 'I am holier than thou' crap. Yes it is about fun, otherwise why bother, but it is also about playing a character well.

Yes, in some threads it is best to play a fun character or, in the times of old, make threads that are fun to read and reply to. But we cannot stick ourselves in grouchy little holes and set definate standards that people must apply. We must move on, Roleplaying Forums has moved on from Inns, Hotels and Academies... they are generally ignored nowheredays. Now the forums have a point where it is simply playing whom you want to be according to rules of DM/Threads.

Sure, there are some screwups in threads that can and at times ruin entire RPGs (and I admit, I was one of them and still accidentally stumble down that road) but why should that stop us doing what we want to do? Begone has the days of old where Cheese was respected and newbies kicked down for n00bishness, now it is quite vice versa. Newbies are being helped, Cheesehead is no longer a respected figure because he whines a lot and still sits in grouchy 'old-RPer ways'.

Sure there are threads that seem excedingly crap, sure there are times when people type too fast and make mutliple typos, but everyone has been there and done that, everyone was new at one stage or had a fast-typing-with-many-errors at one stage in their time here or other forums. But bad RPGs are generally ignored, most typos people can translate...

My point is that we should stop this nagging at each other attitude and start working together to make the forums less a hassle to log into and read hateful flamage, or post it in some people's cases, and start doing roleplaying the way we want to (according to set rules and regulations, like god-modding [yeah, I know, guilty as charged], breaching DM rules, etc).

What these DMs are doing is a great effort to do, I have not seen anyone, not one, take each other's RPGs and attempted to create them as there own in a formal exchange. So before you begin nagging about all this, think about what these DMs are really trying to do before you let your ego spill out of your mouth and your typing fingers.
