Need A Book Recommendation
I want to buy non-fictional book regarding politics in one form or another. I'm not really sure in which direction to go at this moment but I'm thinking possiby No Logo by Naomi Klein or An Anti-capitalist Manifesto by Alex Callinicos. I've not read anything by either of these people before so I have no idea what their style of writing is like.
Another possibility would be a book on propaganda (preferably modern-day or a history of) but I'm completely lost on where to go in this instance. Ideas, anyone? |
Re: Need A Book Recommendation
You should read Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. That book will knock you on your ass.
[edit] Amazon.com lets you read short extracts from books by the way if you want to check out people's writing style. No Logo Anti-Capitalist Manifesto [edit 2] I read the first page of both and I prefer No Logo. I don't think I would read the other one after that first page to be honest. |
Re: Need A Book Recommendation
I read a rather old and tatty of version of that, I think it was from the 1970s. It was interesting but it didn't have any footnotes or references which was irritating.

Re: Need A Book Recommendation
No Logo is pretty good, although it won't tell you much you don't know (although it might help you with evidence and stuff).
People's History is very good as well. I've not read the other. |
Re: Need A Book Recommendation
It's been updated now, it's got chapters on Clinton and the war on terror. He doesn't think Clinton was very good really and he doesn't like the war on terror at all.
There's still no footnotes or anything though. |

Re: Need A Book Recommendation
This is fictional, but its an outstanding read...
Unintended Consequences by John Ross It provides a somewhat different view on world events and american politics shown through a series of characters and different story lines. |
Re: Need A Book Recommendation
I found the Shield of Achilles by Philip Bobbit very good. Judging by the reviews it seems to either be a book people hate or love so read a few pages before you buy it!

Re: Need A Book Recommendation
Not political, but Stalingrad is a pretty good read (quite long...).
Pirates and Emperors by Chomsky is quite interesting, but I find his writing style to be a bit arkward. |
