First and Last Film

I finished reading The Green Mile a couple of days ago. I haven't seen the film for a while, so I watched it this evening.

In the film (something that doesn't happen in the book) the prison warden asks the prisoner (who is to die in the next day or so from execution) if he could do anything for him. The prisoner says "I've never seen a flick film".

So the warden gets a film out (this is based in the 1935 by the way, so his choice was somewhat limited I'd expect) and allows the prisoner to see it. It'd have been his first film and also his last.

So if you had to choose ONE film for someone to watch, to experience the cinematic experience - also as their first and last film - which would you?

I suppose you could go with the "classic" famous films. But a lot of them get better the more you watch them (things such as the Godfather Trilogy). I'd be looking for something that would show this person how realistic film could be, I guess.

Maybe I wouldn't even go with a "real" film - I might go with an animated one like The Incredibles or something.

I don't know - I'm curious to see what you guys would choose though.

Re: First and Last Film

'The Green Mile'

Comedy option of course, but not fully. It is a ****ing excellent film, after all, also it fills the category im about to describe.

I would personally play them something that would leave them with the feeling that there are things worth dying for. Not the "death is not the end" attitude, but the idea that you dont neccesarily have to be afraid of death.

I dont know. Forest gump or something. That always leaves you feeling a bit kinda affected and almost teary. but not in a "everythings terrible :(" sort of way. Plus its a ****ing fantastic film

The thing about a lot of the great films is that they're great because they're unique. This'll be lost on someone who's never seen a film before. So if I had to go with a film that is great but can also be appreciated for what it is without any form of reference then I'd have to go with Citizen Kane.

Re: First and Last Film

Fear and Loathing or Good Will Hunting

I cant decide which. Possibly the latter, as it is a more typical cinematic experience. You have tragedy, hubris and a love story all rolled into a compact and self contained whole.

Fear and Loathing is more challenging; at times it is confusing and the surface plot is essentially meaningless. A 'difficult' movie.

So - Good Will Hunting.

If it was to be their first and last film then it wouldn't really matter what I showed them. Everything would seem amazing. I could show them Cube 2: Hypercube for example. They might end up being glad that they would never see a film again. They might thank me for it!

Yeah... a few people have the idea.

Some are just naming their favourite film though :(

I like Sarina's logic of "oh I wasn't missing out on anything anyway".

I still can't think of one - I was thinking Green Mile too, but I thought it was just because I'd seen it. The idea of them dying soon and then seeing that death isn't so bad is a good one.

Hmmm :(

Leon was a good choice. It kind of fit my category. The main character, your point of view dies, you feel touched but not miserable about it.

pfft. actually SUPPLYING reasoning. fine.

although they aren't my favourite films, my two selections (Apocalypse Now and Annie Hall) are both examples of intensely moving and deep films.

I've got two because people would have different tastes but it's unlikely anyone would dislike both films.

edit: so i'd make them see whichever they'd appreciate more, not both. sorry for any confusion.

My reason to show people American Beauty is to show them how empty and shallow your life can become without even realising if you just go like a mindless drone folowing the flow (or something).

I also would like to mention La Vita E Bella. It tries to show what possitive thinking can do even in the most terrible situations.

i'm struggling to think of any off the top of my head, but it's not really until you find yourself in a similar situation (or one you consider to be similar) to the one you percieved from the film that you make the link...
you might not even make the conscious link and think "oh that reminds me of how i felt when i saw stand by me".... but it's the sense of adventure, that frame of mind, of feeling cool, loose, a sense of something bigger than you, a sunny sky..... but it's not just the individual qualities/ attributes such as the ones i just mentioned, it's what they all add up too. It's a happy feeling but obviously it's more than just that. Because not all happy frames of mind are the same. It's the way you percieve the world and everything in it while in that frame of mind....
i can't explain this :(

yeh donnie darko.

so basically, your emotional range is expanded through the arts. Which is good, because that surely is the purpose of art.

most of these movies have big potential to leave a great impression on pretty much any person that would be in such a situation, yes.

i'm guessing though that a lot of those things you only thought would happen because you saw them in films. it's self-defeating.

If it were a video with a small telly and shitty sound I would probably go for the straight story or something similar. If it were at the movies with decent sound I would pick The Matrix. By far the best cinema experience I’ve ever had.

First a word from the chamber of commerce: Cool Hand Luke was mentioned. This was filmed on location on land that is now covered with houses in the norhern portion of Stockton-on-San-Joaquin.

A word from the Alumni Association: Tom Hanks graduated from Sacramento State University same as me though a few years later.

As to my choice, I would think that if I were in a similar situation I would want to laugh. I would want something visual and slapstick as well as otherwise humerous. I would want to laugh as much as I possibly could even if just for a few hours.

Pink Panther.
or
The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!
or
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
or
The Great Race

Any of them would fit the bill.

What is so great about the third man?

I saw it not too long ago and didn't think it was that great.

Plus Orson Wells isn't in it for ages.
