Stuff to do in Holland (Den Haag/Amsterdam)
 

I'm going to a conference in Holland next week and I'll have a couple of hours to kill in The Hague and wondered if anyone had any advice for stuff to do (cue inevitable sex/drugs replies).

Depending on how early I leave and get back to Amsterdam I should have a while to kill there before my flight back as well.

Also is there anything I should know about those crazy Dutch folk to prepare myself? They do all just speak English right? ;)

Most speak english quite well, thats my experience.

Visit the Rijksmuseum. See Rembrandt.
Tour the channels.
By a small book about amsterdam in advance.

I went to both when I was about 15...
There's plenty to do in Amsterdam, just steer clear of the red light district and don't talk to anyone offering you drugs on the street.
The Hague was quite dull iirc.

the least you could do is say:

"no thankyou sir, im happy sticking to a hideously expensive and not particularly pleasurable drug that happens to be socially acceptable"

It's just good manners.

one of them threatened to "put a knife between my eyes" unless I gave him 50 guilders for a tiny amount of hash.
The shops were much safer thankyou very much.

Well I survived the trip and it was quite cool although I didn't get any time to look around Amsterdam apart from the airport.

I was meant to be going with my supervisor but he phoned up at the last minute to say he was ill so had to go on my own. Once I got there it was pretty cool though and I met quite a few people.

Anna Franks house is quite intresting in Amsterdam and a boat ride on the cannals will kill a bit of time as well
