"Detachment"... what's the word for it?
 

Here in the Netherlands we have the word "detachering" to describe agencies/people who place/are placed into projects of other companies.
For example, an old classmate of mine was detached at Philips, which means he'll be working at Philips in a project, but is employed by this "detachment" agency.
Googling for "detachment" turns up too many medical sites for my liking, so my guess is that I'm not looking for the right word.
So what's the word for this?

Also, while you're at it, can you name some of these agencies?

I'd like to come back on this, I've looked up subcontracting, but it's not really what I was looking for.
I found a company (Yacht) that is also active in the UK, and I've found the following description:
Secondment it is (definition 2).

So Yacht is for one active in the UK, but can you name other companies in the UK, or any other foreign country, that provide this service? Also to foreign people :p.

Sounds like upmarket temping to me, I know that Randstad is a temp agency. There are loads over here, you need to find the right type to deal with you though if you want something specialised. The general ones might have something suitable for you, but they tend to cover lower paid, lower skilled stuff mostly.

Try googling for employment agencies, or temporary work.

I work in that position at the moment, Im paid by my company but work for my client. I am considered a 'contractor' since I work at my client doing a job that my company has been contracted to do.

If you worked for a company and moved to a sister company or another department for a set period of time, this would be considered a 'secondment'.

Secondment is where Person A is employed by Company B, who goes on Secondment to Company C, but still remains employed and paid by Company B.

Outsourcing is where Person A is employed by Company B, who's job and/or department is outsourced to Company C, which then sees Person A employed and paid by Company C, but still doing the same job at Company B.

So, Structural, I'd say the word you are looking for is "Outsourcing" "The department is being outsourced". It's a fancy way of saying sub-contracting I suppose.

There are any number of companies around who do this, typically (at least here in the UK) Government departments are outsourced to companies who claim they can make the same staff do the same job, more quickly and more cheaply. (Been there done that.). It's bollocks.

Working for an umbrella company might be what you mean.
