what sports do you do?

if any?

i do 5 a side football but would like to take up an induvidual sport, so i'd like suggestions on what induvidual sports are fun and also to know what sports you do (doesnt have to be induvidual) just because im nosey.

Re: what sports do you do?

Football, golf and badminton mainly. I've just started playing squash too. I'll play most sports really. If you class running and weight training as sports i do those too.

Deffeh 30 Aug 2005 18:31

Re: what sports do you do?

Squash 2-4 times a week at uni, football once a week on average ( :( ). Very occassionally badminton. Im up for doing almost any sport, but its the sheer hassle of organising that many people at one time that ****s it all up.

Madina 30 Aug 2005 18:33

Re: what sports do you do?

I also play badminton and squash (very badly). Im getting back into tennis also.

LHC 30 Aug 2005 18:35

Re: what sports do you do?

I do football, weight lifting, running (like JC says, dubious 'sports') and rarely tennis. I have planned for ages to do squash and (restart) badminton, and have had recent urges to start playing cricket.

Like Deffeh, I'm up for any sport, but there aren't many other people who are. Cricket for example would be almost impossible to arrange.

Re: what sports do you do?

Only football from time to time but 10 years ago I played in organised football, tennis and bball. Back then I was fit too tho. Hmm maybe there is a connection there?

Leshy 30 Aug 2005 18:36

Re: what sports do you do?

I used to do fencing, which is the sport I would take up again if I had to choose one.

Re: what sports do you do?

Squash is fantastic fun. Almost every point is like the most fun rally in tennis that comes along every half hour or so. Easy to pick up, and theres room to be proud of your game.

Before the start of summer i had actually became pretty good. Unfortunately ive not played since may so ill now be rubbish

Re: what sports do you do?

I occasionally do stuff with a hockeyball and hockeystick.

Not that often though, 15 hours a week maybe max, and then a various number of hours coaching.
The occasional running ofcourse and that's about it.

midge5 30 Aug 2005 22:11

Re: what sports do you do?

I sometimes play 5 a side football though not as often as I would like. The main sports I play are squash and badminton, mainly due to being much easier to organise like someone else mentioned. I also go to a driving range once a week - am too shit to even attempt a golf course yet.

Did karate for 4 years, haven't done that for a year now. Taking up Ju-jitsu in October, would appreciate any advice if we have some experts here. Isn't Jenny a Ju-jitsu fanatic?

golf really isnt a sport guys. no more than darts, and i wasnt as arrogant to include that, so dont include golf

dda 31 Aug 2005 00:41

Re: what sports do you do?

Golf is a sport. It may not be the most active of sports but it is a sport. Darts are a sport also.
I used to play a little golf and found it very entertaining and if you don't rent a cart it is a nice long walk to boot.
When I was younger I played a lot of basketball and baseball.

You don't have to be tall to play basketball. I also didn't say that I was good at it. I was rather good at baseball but not at the others.

As to height, I was, in the flower of my youth 6' 1". I am now a more sedate 6'. 215 lbs.

I get out of bed in the morning.

Occasionally I play football but it's a distant second to going to the pub. I always end up playing some kind of sport if I go to beach actually.

cycling is always good, i also very occationally play in-line hockey, generally when we are very drunk and looking for something to do nowadays though, so plenty of injuries there :( I used to play 7 a side football in a league and also run, christ i used to be fit :(

Re: what sports do you do?

Closest would be Eskrima for now, though I don't intend on getting back into any sort of traditional sport again.

In the past though I have done gymnastics, indoor cricket, hockey, rock climbing, table tennis in that order.

If your looking for an individual sport Embroglio i highly recommend rock climbing. It's fun, relaxing and challenging. Most indoor venues there will be some degree of by yourself climbing you can attempt, but at worse you will need a second person to belay you, and most of the time there is an instructor onsite that can do this for you. Outdoor climbing unless you know what your doing and have a slightly suicidal tendacy has a definate requirement for at least a partner to assist you.

Dancing on a Friday and Saturday nights is the closest I come to a regular excercise routine. I occasionally jog and I do walk an awful lot.

Re: what sports do you do?

I go to the gym and swimming most nights. I'm off in half an hour to play badminton, although that will be the first time in about three years. I hope to start playing football again soon.

Seconded. Though the great outdoors can't be beaten, really.

I climb go climbing
its fun and there are lots of fit boys with no t-shirts on hauling themselves up the wall (if you like that sort of thing)
but it isnt really an individual sport as you need someone else on the other end of the rope
most indoor walls will have a singles night for people who dont have a climbing partner though

I'm taking it up in October (as I said earlier in the thread). Any advice you can give me? Would be much appreciated :)

Football, snooker and rugby in about that order.

Squash is meant to be a good individual sport, it's something I want to take up when I move.

At your service.

Where do you live? I might be able to point you to a club. I do Foundation ('Shorinji kan') jitsu. Foundation jitsu is good because there are clubs all over the country teaching the same style, and running their club in pretty much the same way. This means wherever you are in the country, you can turn up at a Foundation club and be able to train with them, and you'll have a ready-made bunch of friends if you ever move to a new area. It also means that twice a year we can all get together on a mat in Birmingham and train with the best part of a thousand different people.

As far as "my style of jitsu is so rock hard I could kill other styles' students with my hands behind my back" goes, you won't hear it form me. I can't tell you what will work for you, but I will tell you that jitsu is suitable for pretty much anyone, unless you're particularly frail, I wouldn't recommend it for pensioners. Unless you've got a physical disability, you should be able to do everything the rest of us do at jitsu, or at least, attempt it =]

Re: what sports do you do?

Thanks for showing up :)

I did karate up to second kyu, so I'm used to knocks, etc. My karate master was also a black belt in Ju-jitsu, and a Master of Weapons, meaning that we did a lot more than just basic Wado-Ryu - had the mats out a lot, etc. However, I don't know much more than that.

I'm quite looking forward to taking up something totally new, and I'm in Cardiff (Cathays/Roath area) if that helps. If you could point me to a club or a list of them in the area, I would be much obliged. I'm just a normal human, no known heart defects or the like :p

Jennifer 4 Sep 2005 22:28

Re: what sports do you do?

Go to UWIC Jitsu @ NIAC, Cyncoed Campus, Cyncoed, Cardiff on Monday, 20:30 – 22:00 and Wednesday, 20:30 – 22:00.

Tell them Poogle send you.

Also, if I can get my hands on training times for it, there's another club, which is a different style - Aiuchi. Aiuchi started life as something of a splinter group of TJF, there's quite a bit of politics involved which you're more likely to hear about if you train with Aiuchi than TJF. Aiuchi is not as wide spread as TJF - you can find a TJF club within reasonable distance of most British cities. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend attending this Aiuchi club because the instructor is absolutely brilliant (though I've heard great things of Cardiff's TJF instructor too, what the hell, train at both of them!)
