Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

The following is the proposed new downtime procedure for next round and the future.

Pros:
-Simple
-No fleets recalled
-Time to sort out defence calls etc

Cons:
-Time for defence, scans + covert ops to occur
-Possible confusion over defence calls

Planned Downtimes

These will be announced at the time.

-Aim to announce at least 48 hours in advance
-Stop ticker, close game
-Reopen game unmodified, restart ticker
-Promise to have a 24 hour downtime if less than 24 hours notice is given

Unplanned Downtimes

If less than 1 tick is affected, no action is taken.

If one or more ticks are affected:
-Game is rolled back to last unaffected backup (< 1 hour after game has come back up)
-Game is reopened "as is" (i.e. no fleet recall)
-Ticks restart 24 1/2 hours after backup was taken (i.e. 24 ticks have been missed)
-e-mails / IRC messages can be sent to Appoco/Cin to update vacation mode and recall a fleet / prelaunch ALL fleets if the game is down and the user cannot stay to access the game. This is a BEST EFFORTS service and not a guarentee that we will do as requested

How long does it take you to roll back the game? i.e. will people be available to login 1-4hours after it went down? giving them 20ish hours to login and recall fleets? just want to clarify when the game will be 'reopened'.

updated :)

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

Light, the game will be reopened as soon as there's been a successful rollback - ticks will start 24 hours as of the successful rollback tick.

I.e. if last safe backup point was at a 5pm tick (with the backup occuring at 17:30), the game will reopen as soon as a rollback has been completed, and ticks will start at 6pm the following day.

Also:

Many many thumbs up, PATeam.

<3 u Richard!!

edit: Richard got there first :(

Then we'd have to have a full fleet recall.

This sounds much better than current system.

Yes!

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

And what happens if it is down for one tick? I only see the situation of less and more than 1 tick.

But apart from that, yes, sounds very promising so far.

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

I assume they meant "one or more ticks".

Nice job PATeam.

Can we have extra days added on to the round to make up for the downtime though? I paid* for 10 weeks this round and I'm getting only 9**! :(

* I didn't actually waste any of my own money on this silly little game, don't be ridiculous!
** 9.5, but shhh! :(

what would happen if the game where to be left open with the ticks stopped? is there any real reason to close the game if the ticks have been stopped?

think you should re-read the original post

the game will be open 24h until the ticks start again (if a rollback of 1 or more ticks occured)

btw

where can i sign that this procedure is going to be used !?
cause it rox

i was just wondering why the game would be closed, then reopened "unmodified".
why not just leave it open?

The game needs to be closed while a rollback is occuring

but for a planned downtime no rollbacks occur. it just paused then unpaused.

You need to build a feature which will do this manually, a sort of play by email type of thing.

or just have 1 page hosted on a different server which people can login to and request it. Then when the game comes up and they do the rollback, Appoco can simply hit one button which updates it.

Awesome!!!

Updated it slightly to make it clear that it's <1 vs >=1 hour, and that there won't be a rollback

Huh? Did you mean "no down time"?

Appocomaster 30 Mar 2009 07:35

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

Er, no. I meant no fleet recall :)

Tiamat101 1 Apr 2009 20:18

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

Any system where fleets are being recalled is Bad, so if you are going to not have a "fleet recall" better make sure you give the right amount of time for def/scans and such after reopening.

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

you'll want a case in the unplanned section to cover database corruption which demands a rollback regardless of how many ( or few ) ticks are affected, just to ensure database integrity

Re: Round 31+ Proposed Downtime Procedure

Could we also get procedures for when the round is extended by a downtime? Last week for example, or last 10% of the original round length?
