Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

I was thinking and its not really the best idea. Its more if the community likes it.

Give planets to que research for just 1 time? When they qued once they cannot que again? People can save it up for the 1 important day in the round they really cant login.

Cause tomorrow its queensday (search on youtube if you dont know what it is) here in holland. And ill be prob way to drunk to remeber when i have to start my new research.

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

this game seems to be promoting drink more and more. Research in general takes a lot longer the further you go, so queueing it up could possibly mean you never need to visit the research screen for a week. Not sure i like this.

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

you can actually already help not miss research ticks without 'queue'

say you have a drinking session/party in 2 hours and you won't be around for 10 hours from then due to being hung over. If you have a research that is finishing in 4 ticks meaning you'd miss 8 ticks of research you can just pause that research before you leave and start another branch of research which takes 10+ ticks and would have been next on your list to do. This way when you get back from whatever you were doing you can finish stop the research you started before you went out and switch it back to the one thats almost complete meaning you don't miss any research ticks and barely miss any time in finishing certain researches.

Research queueing in general sounds like a good idea. The fact that people have to get up in the middle of the night to press one ****ing button is awful. As such, I don't see why people would be limited to using it one time only.

As lilboi said you just pause your current res before you go to sleep and pick the next so it does it through the night , then go back to your original res when you wake up , getting up in the middle of the night to start a res is just dumb

only possible benefit for this ( and the only reason i can see people getting up to start another research) is for Scanners, everyone else can use lilboi's suggestion but scanners only star6t with scan researches.

Couldn't agree more.

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

In past I probably would've argued that you can stop a research which finishes at an inconvenient time and start a longer one instead, going through short researches whilst you're around. These days it's just a pain.

Just add a queue function which works the same as constructions. If anyone argues that it'll destroy the value of activity - the more dedicated players will always come out on top anyway.

[DW]Entropy 30 Apr 2009 15:40

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

just seems like a lazy mans function to me, why not just add the option of queueing X amount of constructions so long as you have the resources for it. Then extend it to constructions since we're grouping them in the same category these days.

Sounds good to me.

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

To appeal to a broad player-base (or potential players) you ideally want a game that doesn't require you to wake up in the middle of night and click a button.

It's not really a game at that point--it's an inconvenience.

Anything that can make it less of an inconvenience and more of a game, is a good thing!

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

If we continue this line of "reasoning" to its logical conclusion we'll end up with a game that plays by itself. All we'll need to do will be to set a few basic parameters when we sign up and then log in at the end of the round to see how well (or badly) we've done.

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

Slippery slope. No one is arguing for a game that plays itself, piss off.

Is that really necessary?

I personally don't see the harm in adding a research queue though, it's not like getting researches done optimally is a huge advantage anyway.

Nor did I suggest that anyone was.
Nevertheless, that is where this line of suggestions ultimately finishes.

So.. how far down that "slippery slope" should we go? Who will decide when we've implemented "enough" changes to make the game more playable for the "less active"?

Surely common sense should tell you?

If you have to get up in the middle of the night to do something - that's unacceptable for casual players. If your planet can keep on going for more than 24 hours without you then it's certainly too far in the other direction.

Somewhere in the middle should satisfy most users.

or just don't get up in the middle of the night. we cant change the entire game for people who WANT to play more actively than others, but cant be arsed getting up to do it.

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

Missing a few research ticks doesn't cause your planet to blow up, but those who don't want to miss any can wake up and set their research.

I'm all for making the game more casual-friendly but features like this do damage to "hardcore" players, it just decreases their advantage over casual players. For example; massing dists hasn't really been viable since construction queueing was introduced since the people who did it successfully relied on missing fewer ticks than scanners (who don't generally get up in the middle of the night to build amps) to be ahead.

There's a delicate balance between making the game casual friendly and gimping hardcore play styles, I think that the pausing of research does this sufficiently well. If your research is going to finish whilst you're not around and you don't want to miss out on research ticks, you can pause it and start another. If you want it to finish whilst you sleep to reap its benefits (HCT and Core) you just have to sacrifice a few research ticks. It's not that huge a deal.

Light 2 May 2009 23:41

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

and the problem is, that simplifying things and all these wonderful things for the casual isnt actually fixing any major problems.

Missing afew research ticks wont make a casual quit the game, they more than likely wont even realise its anything negative.. Rather they'll log in the following day and set the next research.

The fundemantal problem with the casual/hardcore approach, is no matter how much you simplify things, casuals are always going to have a dreadful time playing Planetarion due to being bashed constantly by actives whenever they get roids.

Indeed. Excellent. Hardcore players get plenty of advantages, it would be a good thing if they lost some.

No, distwhoring hasn't been viable since people found out that 1) cov ops are useful, 2) SKs are useful, and 3) FCs are ****ing awesome. My galaxy distwhored successfully in round 24. Construction queuing was introduced for round 21.

All that said, I agree with Light that to regard this as the solution to all problems would be a big mistake.

Covops can be defended against with population and/or guards, SKs can be killed. Lack of FCs is the price you pay I guess, but if you get enough roids it can balance out (being unscannable generally keeps incs at bay and makes it easier to land attacks)

GReaper 3 May 2009 00:29

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

Is the determination to get up in the middle of the night to organise your own defence not enough of an advantage for hardcore players?

It isn't a major problem, but it's certainly one of those things which would be positive for the majority of players who want to play the game in a skilled and tactical way without having to get up at some stupid time to try and get the best out of the research. I thought the construction changes made ages ago was a huge step in the right direction, I'd personally think it would be another nice small step forward to make research that little be easier as well.

Mzyxptlk 3 May 2009 01:10

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

Kila, I'm not even sure why you're arguing here. We agree that disting is an unviable strategy. Your reasoning is that construction queuing is the cause. This is incorrect, my galaxy has done it very successfully in round 24 (a round with few cov oppers and SKs) and my alliance somewhat less successfully in round 25 (the first round with a lot of SKs). End of story, you're wrong,

Re: Just some thinking reseach que for only 1 time?

I'm for an Autoqueue solution both for construction and research:
you give order to research I branch or construct 1 building. You research and construction staff will just continue in the same way until you give a different order.
- Start HCT2, they wil do HCT3 once they're done, then HCT4...
- Build a sec center, they'll continue buiding them until you give a different order
You wil enjoy the benefit of queuing with a drawback that still promotes activity over laziness.

If thats the case you'd need to take out the research tree and have a continuous research line for each area. So researching HCT for 26 hours would mean you pass 2 milestones (HCT1 and HCT2), but that particular research line will never be complete until HCT XVI when it will stop. Just a thought.
