Audio codecs

Hi Everybody!

I'm thinking of re-encoding my mp3 collection into ogg files for the benefit in audio quality. I know going from mp3 to ogg directly will reduce audio quality but I have lossless backups of my mp3's in ape format.
The point of this thread is I'm curious about what methods other people on these baords are using to encode audio atm. What quality settings would you use, atm I'm encoding at 6.64 quality using ogg vorbis. This is a fairly big operation with 10k+ mp3's and I'd like a little technical input before I go mad encoding.

Ogg vorbis, -5.

If you want to recode, use Foobar. That does large groups of files quite well.

would flac be a better alternative to ape in terms of lossless encoding for any new cd's I get my hands on? It seems to be better supported but it generates larger files in my experience.

Flac's my choice for lossless, certainly. File size isn't that much of an issue (most of the time anyway).

a different question:

i have some .wma files on my disk, but i cant play them via winamp, since i would have to update my windows media player which i obviously dont want to do.

so anyone can tell how to turn them in .mp3?

edit: there some fine converters outthere :)

Winamp 5.x has WMA support.

Still in sheffield, done an Msc in Bioinformatics and I'm doing some work for siemens. Everyone always asks what the hell bioinformatics is so I'll just say it's genetics and programming, lots of sequence information for analysis in modern biochemistry. Anyways got myself a beautiful girl and been with her for a year which prevented a whim to return to come to fruition. Other than that I've just been relaxing and enjoying whats left of my youth, making new friends but mainly pissing off old ones :).

I also spilt some cola on my keyboard about 3 months ago and I still havn't sorted it out,. Typing has become laborious so I'll end my two year story here.
