Interestingly (not really) in this six month period the top sixty posters accounted for approximately 29k posts. In the same six month period it was 38k (if you cut out KaneED's negative contribution).

However, as I posted more times in this period (1,277 vs 804) I'm pretty sure we can safely say overall there were more good posts this time overall.

I met NB3, Aryn, Phil^, RR_0, Deepflow and Appocomaster in York at the beginning of June...

If JJ felt inclined he could probably post the average post length for everyone in the top x posters, presuming he has sql access. I suppose that would include quoted text though, which would skew things. I'm pretty sure that the top 10 posters all write fairly long posts from time to time and so their overall characters posted would probably be fairly consistent with their post rank.

I can't be bothered to work it out fully, but in horn's reputation thread recently Yahwe, Jonny and myself all posted well over 3000 words each, for instance (in one thread).

Yes I love Voltaire - I actually enjoyed reading Candide when I was quite young, and I still throw it in my suitcase now and then when I travel.
