Here in this part of Ireland we have bonfires on the eve of May the 1st, harks back to ye 'ol pagan times. Unlike the anglecized Dubliners who have bonfires when the English do.

Ahh there's nothing quite like walking through the city, ash and smoke everywhere, the smell of burn in your nostrels, the smug satisfaction of knowing it's not your car...
Kids hawling away all your waste wood, doing things their parents wouldn't allow them any other night of the year.
Hiding spray cans in the center of the fire, walking on the ashes the next morning and melting the sole of your shoes.
Those were the days ;)

May Day heralds the Celtic summer. Back in the day it celebrated the festival of Beltaine, which was like a giant hippy love fest. If you English hadn't come and ruined it all, I could have been up all night shagging the crap out of various Celtic maidens...
