[rant] the perfect job!

Hi everyone apologies in advance for this mini-rant...,

A few weeks ago in mid-May, I got a call from a head-hunter on behalf of SIEMENS who they told me they found my resume on a website (just4engineers). I had a phone interview with these head-hunters and they decided to forward me for the position to SIEMENS directly. We set up an interview, and it went really well and the interviewers were very chatty and open about how well I did - saying that I had done very well with their questions and the interview as a whole. They told me to expect a response sometime during the last week of May as they needed to run several more interviews and discuss it with their boss who was currently out of town.

It's been 3+ weeks and I'm really anxious to hear back from them because although it's only been a week past their 'deadline' it feels like I've been waiting forever. Worst thing is I can never get a hold of them via the phone - their switchboard is always lit-up. My gut instinct was telling me not to worry over the past two weeks because I honestly felt like I'd get the job, but now I'm starting to wonder why it's taking so long. I really hope I get this job as the pay is fantastic for a graduate (£27k), the job seems interesting (and is related to my degree), and the office is less than 10 mins drive from where my best friend lives (and he needs a housemate ASAP which would be perfect). It seems like this job is "too good to be true" which is why recently I've been having my doubts about whether I'll get it.

I think it all depends on the exact experience they're looking for because it's a regional "coordinator" for Learning and Development (covering 400+ employees) and I've only ever done this kind of work as a PROJECT (not a job function) for teams of around 20. Maybe they feel I'd be out of my depth but if that's so why did they call me for the interview? Perhaps they're so lazy at finding candidates themselves that they presume the head-hunter is right and just interview anyone? If so, did they even really look at my CV and did I ever have a chance? And why were they so positive when it ended saying that I did so well, but there has been zero-contact since? There's only so many messages I can leave for them without my sounding desperate :-(

I'm sure I'd be able to do well in this job as it's a natural career progression from what I'm doing now. If I don't get it, it would hurt because I only have until July 7th to find a new job (that pays what I'm earning now so I don't slip back into my overdraft) before my fixed-term contract expires. And I'd love to live with my best mate again - I haven't hung-out with him properly in almost 9 months now. Everything seems to be pointing that this job is what I want and need.

So, I think this is where the discussion opens up - has anyone ever been in a position like this before (waiting for interviewers to get back to you?) or had the feeling that although you've been told you're good enough you start doubting yourself.... Has anyone ever had their future up in the air because their job pretty much dictates everything else they can do (as in available money, location, etc..). Worst thing is that I can't get a hold of them or the head-hunter (has anyone has experiences with head-hunters before?) and the head-hunter doesn't reply to my emails (why the hell are people becoming so email averse now?), which I'm starting to see as a bad sign.

Anyways....... thoughts/comments/etc...?

I'm not really sure that qualifies as a rant.

But well done anyway.

I can't remember applying for any graduate trainee schemes (at least, not after uni) which goes to show what an idiot I was. And thus I ended up doing pretty dreadful jobs for a while. But now everything seems cool. I have a chap to do photocopying for me and everything. Shame I don't want anything photocopied, but still.

Indeed, if they don't call within a few days, you're out of the game usually. That's been my experience solliciting in the Netherlands so far. All places where I got a position they said "yes" within two days, or they write a letter saying "no" which you get after a week, or you never hear from then again.

Or, it could be a trick. Since they are looking for a "coordinator" kind of person, they are waiting who calls them what the status of the selection is... like, you know, see who is pro-active and assertive and stuff, because, you can't have coordinators who are lazy and wait for stuff to happen.

Or, I could just be overly negative and they call you tomorrow.

My gut reaction would be, you are second choice and they're waiting to see if the first choice accepts or not.

Why is it such a problem that they're always busy? Take an hour out to phone them, and just stay on hold for ages - it sucks, but so what? Once you get through to the correct department, get that person's name, and see if they can give you a direct number (explain it's taken bloody ages to get through the hold system). This way, if you end up chasing a dead end (eg: the boss is out, or they'll get back to you then "forget"), you can take the shortcut next time.

It's not pushy, it's just following it up. If you want something doing, then help it along the way by putting some effort in. They aren't going to say "crikey this gentleman is a pushy individual! we're RETHINKING giving him the job because of him asking about the job!", are they...?

Yep I think you're right... I'll call and wait on hold for however long it takes today because it's getting a bit ridiculous... Thanks for the suppo, i mean... doom-mongering everyone ;-P although realistically I'd have expected to be contacted by now if I'd been successful.... boo :-(

Why am I on a habit of writing a long piece of text, then not sending it for some reason, and instead writing a brief stupid note?

I don't know, but we are all thankful of it. ;)

I would ring them up and check. If they still want to give you the job the worst it can turn out is you looking enthusiastic about wanting the position.

I read what you wrote and looks as though you haven't got the job, they probably posted a letter to you in 3rd class saying how great you were on the day but just not quite good enough.

It sucks, but so does the real world.

Try phoning the recruiter who set you up, I am sure he has a good idea, considering if you get the job you make him mula.
