What is your major malfunction?

This is a thread for people to state what they see as their biggest flaws.

It's not a thread for saying 'I don't have any because I'm perfect', nor for mocking one another.

I am genuinely interested in what parts of themselves people see as problematic, as well as their ways of dealing with them.

Personally I'd see my most problematic flaws as:

procrastination: When i have something I need to do but don't want to, I often (almost always) worry and stress and think about it, rather than just getting the **** on with it, meaning I can easily spend two weeks worrying about doing something that would actually take me about 10 minutes to do if i just got on with it.

Not caring what people think: While this is often a positive thing, I think I take it too far and say things that are very easy to take out of context and give people a false impression of who I am. I do try to censor myself more in certain contexts, and sometimes I suceed (for example, I don't swear in front of other people's parents), but in general (especially online) I tend to say things that may alienate people and make them think I'm a completely different person to the 'real' me.

I always want to help people: Again, not in itself a bad thing, but it often leads me into relationships with self-destructive people who have no desire to change. The end result is either that I 'save' them, and they stop needing me, or that I can't do anything, and I get too emotionally involved, which inevitably leads to me getting hurt.

I'm sure I have many more flaws, but to me those are the ones I feel have most negative impact on my life.

Now tell me yours!

Re: What is your major malfunction?

hmmm I would have to say my worst malfunction is indeed laziness/procrastination: When I have something to do, that I KNOW has to be done I just will put it off as late as possible and even let it pass that stage sometimes. I will try to find anything to make me avoid doing what I should be doing, that would be so much more worth while. It really annoys me sometimes, I had a streak where i managed to change myself for about 2 weeks, I got things done I never put them off, but alas im back to myself again.

I generally dont think about the things I have to do during the day, its only during night right before i goto sleep, and I think about what has to be done tomorrow, when it comes down to it I will do sweet **** all about it, which kind of makes me dissapointed in myself.

Whats that saying 'Tomorrow never comes' sure as hell doesn't for me.

I share your habit of procrastination. You'd be amazed how long I can take to do mundane tasks when there's revision to be avoided. Case in point, I bumped into one of my friends on the way to the laundry the other day, and we spent an hour talking about anything we could as she was avoiding finishing her art project and I was avoiding coursework. She's probably even worse in that respect than I am.

My other major flaw is that I'm a nosey ****er. Seriously, I'm not even tactful about it. This doesn't tend to be too much of a problem as most of my friends are either receptive to that or don't care (otherwise they wouldn't be my friends I assume) but I've offended a few people before now. I just don't like the idea of things being hidden (lawl insecure lawl).

That's probably about it.

laziness by far

Re: What is your major malfunction?

We all seem to share laziness/procrastination :( myself included.

My greatest failing is an inability to truly believe that my friends really do like me. It's got better but I'm just paranoid on that front. It all stems from constant bullying at both primary and secondary school - mainly from people I considered friends. University, in comparison, has been superb.

Re: What is your major malfunction?

Procrastination is bad for me when I'm on the net. When I'm on the net I'll simply put things off for ages. If I don't have the internet, or don't have an activity on there (such as a game) that takes up time, I'm pretty productive.

I found the only way I could beat procrastination was to do things as early as possible. If I tell myself I'll get it done in more than 24 hours, then it gets slipped into "low-priority" mode and I don't bother getting round to it until it becomes pretty urgent.

Apart from laziness, I honestly don't think I do have many flaws. Now I'm far from perfect, but I'm quite a nice guy - I do care about other people and try to help them (often putting them before myself) and I don't take myself or life too seriously. I have aims in life and I try to be aware of things in the world.

I suppose I care a bit too much what people think of me. It's petty, but it is important to me. Not in terms of me being vain, but I want people to think I'm nice/funny/cool etc. This isn't a major flaw, but sometimes I put this at a priority it shouldn't really be at. I hate it when people don't like me, as I can't understand why they wouldn't like me. Arrogant maybe.

Re: What is your major malfunction?

actually i count procrastination as one of my virtues; i don't worry about things i've put off, and a lot of the time it later turns out that whatever i was putting off didn't need to be done in the first place. if it still needs done, then i do it. so it's just good time management.

for 'flaws' i put down my utter lack of any attention span and/or work ethic.

I'm terrifically lazy and also possess a reasonably dangerous self-destructive streak. Apart from that I'm probably perfect ;)

Oh, and I'm not very good at appreciating poetry :(

This happens to me all the time.

Procrastination used to be quite a bad problem for me, there's a Calvin & Hobbes quote which sums it up :

Calvin : You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood.
Hobbes : What mood is that?
Calvin : Last-minute panic.

However, recently I've noticed that this is no longer true - even under last minute panic (an hour before a meeting where I have to give a big presentation, the night before a piece of coursework is due in and so on) I can't do certain things. So I don't really try now. I'm either going to do with time to spare or it's not going to be done at all. I'm pretty sure the new state of affairs is much worse, but it saves me the panic stage.

As for my flaws ; I am lazy, stupid, self-destructive, I have a large cruel streak and I am overly judgemental. Oh, and I am highly prejudiced.

Despite all this most people I meet still seem to manage to be worse than me though. :(

I can't work. Honestly, the though of one 8 hour shift frightens me to death. I'm not afraid of people as such, as i dont want to have anything to do with them, dont want to be in a position of having people who are responsible for me, or be responsible for anyone else. I just want to be left alone to do what i want.

I have had jobs in the past, worked 45 hour weeks and such, but i cant even remotely remember how the **** i managed it.

As well as the procrastination thing like most others seem to be mentioning, I am also way too competitive and it can just get silly sometimes.

Me too!

I let phone messages pile up forever and then only answer the onces which are a must. I hate to make phone calls even if it is to people I know and like. If there is no answer I feel somehow rejected. I communicate so much better when I can look at people and read the body language.

I am always afraid that I am interrupting or imposing on the other person when I call. I don't mind people calling me, though I don't like being repeatedly interrupted if I am doing something I want to do.

I see people walking around, driving around, whatering around talking on their phones and I dislike them for it. Not because I really care but becasue I would feel totally self-conscious if I did so.

Re: What is your major malfunction?

I had to use the dictionary for this one, so please bear with me!

I'm too introverted when I'm sober. However, when I have been drinking, I can socialise with pretty much everyone. Unfortunately, when I meet these people when I'm sober, we have nothing to talk about and I imagine I seem pretty dull by then. I'm very shy :(
A second consequense of this, is that I am a very good listener, but I never tell anyone about my problems. I like to think that I will turn into a psycho, and go kill everyone who insulted me because of this (Actually, I don't).

The obvious solution to this problem is to be drunk more, but that doesn't work so well when you have exams, and a job to think about.

Schoolwork is also worrying, because I tend to not do things that don't interest me, unless I have a knife against my throat. This means that I don't do well in subjects such as religion and norwegian, but I do very well in maths, physics and ethics.

And I'm a notorius liar (Did you eat that cookie? No, of course not, what cookie?).

me too, but i don't really see it as a flaw, as it doesn't affect my life much, and i just dont care.

i'm also notoriously shit at replying to email. I get the mail, I read it, i think of what I'll say in reply, and then just don't bother. Then all of a sudden i have a hundred messages i should reply to, and it all seems too much work...then the procrastination comes in and i stress about how many messages i have and how rude it is of me to ignore them.

My major malfunction is my tolerance. Thanks to my job I work with a combination of retards, idiots and morons and I smile sweelty and deal with it, right up to the point where I get bored and wind them up.

I enjoy that bit.

I'd say something unique, but they've all been said. I was quite surprised that Vampy's initial three points all applied to me, and the point about the email also applies, right down to thinking about what to reply with, but never bothering to do it. I think it's probably perfectionism; even though the person receiving the email won't care, I can't bring myself to post an off-the-cuff response.

When I get angry, my brain faults and I dont think. That has caused me quite a lot of trouble over the years.
And I'm lazy as hell. Instead of doing schoolwork and getting finished with my diploma (allready one year late) I use drugs and watch movies. I also like elitism too much, even thought I try to get better on that. I can also be a asshole to people I dont know, and its very hard in real life to get to know me. Oh and I care too much, I'm quite nosy both at private and in work/politics/whatever.
However, allthought these things do make me ****up much, it also defines me much better then what I'm good at.
