Yes?

I don't know how many people employed within the game of football you think are killed in the top class game each year, but bear in mind that I can think of one professional footballer or coach, ever, who was killed in a sporting related attack and that should tell you quite how common it is. And that one guy was closely linked to organised crime and betting syndicates.

ok hes not dead ...

but this doesnt surprise me, its more to do with the games connection to violence on the pitch and off the pitch and between spectators.

not a coach this time - http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sp...cle2375548.ece

but my point is, the outward general idea of cricket being a gentlemans game and football not.

Hockey (ice or field) - would we be as surprised ?

I disregard boxing as its not a team sport, but does have a general mind set of violence

You're hardly painting a picture of a sport which frequently and noteably has people killed for their participation in the game by picking two examples where people weren't injured and over which there was a significant outcry in the respective countries.

I would be. For all the violence on the ice or turf, hockey generally doesn't have much violence at or from its participants outside the field of play.

Similar here. After Mike Tyson instigated a fight at a press conference announcing his bout against Lennox Lewis in 2002 he was heavily criticised in the press, who also roundly supported Nevada's decision to not allow him a boxing license for the event.

Yes, the stereotype is to have these sports violent in and out of the field of play, and followed by violent people, but that's similar to say that all those darkies are thieves and criminals who rape our women. It's just not supported by what actually happens.
