Yep, that about sums up Teesside.

Nottingham as 2nd worst? Bollocks. Yes there is a high amount of violent crime in certain areas but it seriously isn't that bad.
Mansfield at 6? yeh, ok it's a shithole!

Obviously, when T+F moved out, the only restraint on crime was gone, and the gangs moved in.

well hell, they didn't need to do a survey to work out hull is the worst city in the country, you just had to ask me :(

(shower me with pity folks - mental health, in Hull, yeah i'm owed 50 million christmas cards at least.... that or just being carted off to the nearest loony bin... oh that's right we closed it....)

NEWSBOT3 10 Aug 2005 15:28

Re: Worst places to live in the UK

hull is dead correct.

theres a massive demand for IT workers in hull - because no-one wants to live there, it's a complete shithole. Go there by train. exit station. look around. see problem.

It might not seem bad if your used to it but it isn't the norm. Most places in this country you don't have to worry about gang's blowing your brains out, although i'm sure eventually evreywhere will be as bad

Birmingham? Manchester? Liverpool? London? I'm sure there are parts of them which are much more dangerous. The gun crime is only really in St. Annes and the Meadows areas.

Salford (manchester) was up there.

I remember me and a couple of uni mates got lost there on something like the 2nd night out of freshers week in the first year. We hailed a taxi when we realised we had no idea where we were and he stopped, looked around, and said "GET IN QUICK!! what you doing alone in salford this time of night? stupid ****ing students" or words to that effect.

great days.

You see, this is exactly the kind of misinformed stereotype this type of shitty program reinforces. Nottingham simply isn't like that.
As with all large cities, there are "areas you don't go". However, if you come to Nottingham to do some shopping you are not going to get shot. I can't recall a single incident of a shooting in the centre of Nottingham at night, never mind in broad daylight. Of course there are the areas away from the centre (St Annes and The Meadows) which have drug related rivalries with each other, but unless you live there you've got no reason to go there. It's not as if they're right next to the town centre, you have to walk a fair way to get there.

Now of course there will be some violence in the city centre on a friday/saturday night. This is unfortunately something common to all major urban areas, and more than likely to your local village pub on one occasion or another. People get drunk. Shit happens. To my knowledge, none of it is gun related.

I resent the fact that because two small areas of the city district have a drug rivalry going on, Nottingham somehow gets painted as some sort of lawless gun-slinging slum.

Maybe I should have elaborated a bit here, I don't think that Nottingham is like the wild west or something, but it does obviously have a gun crime problem worse than other cities. Of course all cities have there ghettos, I live in Newcastle which has its rough spots, and it also has trouble of a night time with the boozers getting rowdy.
If you look at it unbiasedly you would see when there are gun amnestys being announced, police operations to seize guns and your own chief constable admiting he has lost control on violent crime it doesn't look good.

Proteus 10 Aug 2005 18:10

Re: Worst places to live in the UK

It annoyed me rather a lot, as they analysed (often extremely arbitrary) local authority areas rather than sensible regions. So South Cambridgeshire, for instance, gets a high mark because the place that would drag it down (the City of Cambridge) is a separate local authority cut out of the middle of it, whilst the rural areas in Guildford borough get lumped together with the dump that is Guildford in the centre. No one in Surrey would rather live in Mole Valley or Epsom and Ewell than Guildford borough (as the property prices in the villages around Guildford can testify).

Their formula also seemed a little suspicious, as having a fantastic score in one area (open spaces in Ashford and lifestyle in Westminster, for instance) massively overbalanced rubbish scores in other areas (crime in Westminster and everything else in Ashford), whereas the true "best" place would surely be decent in all areas rather than rubbish in some and brilliant in others.

Likewise, some of the "worst" areas seemed to be dragged down really far by one particularly bad statistic (like crime in Nottingham and unemployment in several places), despite being okay or even really good (lifestyle in Nottingham) in other areas.

One might almost believe that they deliberately went after extremes to make the programme more entertaining, but that couldn't be the case.

What about Kingston? I hear they have bonified terrorists snapping pictures of everything at Kingston Town Center already and, except for the brave janitors with their trusty mops, there would soon be bombs going off all over the Center.

I laughed that Harrogate made number three. Harrogate is the sort of place that manages to make Micheal Aspel look interesting. I think 85% of the population are aged over seventy.

As I said, they analysed local government areas, so the Easington they mean is the district rather than the place.

ah yes, but in this case the entire district of easington is a giant shithole, with the village of easington colliery at the certre, the village name should give you some hints as to why its such a shit area to live.
